What is a Guild and Why Have One?

In 1624, the English metaphysical poet, John Donne, summed up one view of society when he said,

“No man is an island.”

What Donne expressed was that society, as we know it, is made up of many different associations. In former times, beginning in the eighth century and continuing into the late 1700’s society was comprised of many different associations primarily based upon a variety of activities and interests such as different trades, mercantile interests, and even some based upon spiritual interests. Many of these associations known as “guilds” had a patron saint, and many of them sponsored altars in churches, built chapels, and also cared for their members such as widows and orphans. Some spiritual associations were also known as “confraternaties.” These groups would pray regularly, sponsor feast days and work to promote the spiritual well being of their society.

Today’s associations seem to be based mainly upon different industries such as technology, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, sports and entertainment. There seem to be few if any that have continued to promote the spiritual well being of society. Has the spiritual realm ceased to exist? Hardly. Perhaps we have just forgotten, or much worse yet, have we simply been deceived by “The Great Deceiver” or the “The Father of Lies?”

No, the spiritual realm is more active than ever and is more important than ever. This is the reason we are establishing and promoting St. Monica’s Guild. We hope, and we are praying, that you will investigate joining St. Monica’s Guild for your own good, as well as for that of your own loved ones. And too, for the good of society as a whole.

If a plant is to bear a beautiful blossom, it must have healthy roots to support it. So too, if our society is to blossom with the best of everything for everyone, we must return to our roots and our foundational values that made us great in the first place.

The time is now, and the place is right here. Everyone is very busy with many activities. That is why St. Monica’s Guild is organized as an online association. You can participate in the guild from the comfort of you home, your car or your office as you choose. The important thing is to get it done before it is too late. Remember the famous words of John Donne,

“No man is an island.”
